AnthonyMarquezachievedhisboyhooddreamofbecomingaMarine,followinginthefootstepsofhisuncle.In2011,AnthonywasdeployedtoSangin,Afghanistan,wherehisunit,1stBattalion,5thMarines,ultimatelylost17Marines.HewashauntedbytheirdeathsandreturnedhometotheUnitedStateswithadesiretohonorthem.HedecidedtocarveabattlefieldcrossforeachoftheseGoldStarfamilies,adesignationgiventothosewhoserelativesdiedwhileservinginatimeofconflict.From2016to2019,hehand-deliveredall17crosses. Anthony’sgoalwascomplete,buthisworkwasnotyetover.In2021,the10-yearanniversaryofhisunit’sdeployment,AnthonysetoutinanRVwithhisfilmmakerbrothertorevisitallofthefamilies.Theywantedtooffereachfamilyawayofmemorializingandtellingtheworldabouttheirlovedones.Alongtheway,AnthonyreconnectedwithotherMarineswhohadalsoknownthedeparted—thefAllenmembersofabattalionwhosemottoremains“MakePeaceorDie.”ThisjourneytotellthestoriesofthefAllenhelpednotonlythefamilies,butalsoAnthonyonhisownpathtohealing.
