Forthenextmonthorso,thingsremaincalm,untilStanleyisawakenedbyalatenightcallfromBuckley,whosaysthatKayhaslefthim"forgood."AftersneakingovertoBuckleyandKay'splace,StanleylearnsfromacabdriverthatKaytookataxitotheBanks's.ThetwomenthenreturntotheBankshouse,wherethecouplemakeupafterKay'sjealousyisrevealedtobeamisunderstandingstemmingfromBuckley'slatenightsworkingattheoffice.Kay,aswellasStanley,realizeBuckley'sdevotiontohisfamily. Asthebaby'sbirthapproaches,nervesamongtheparentsandgrandparentsbecomefrayed.Theeventualbirthofababyboydelightseveryone,exceptStanley,adistantandwaryobserveroftheas-yet-unnamedbaby,whostartstocrywheneverStanleycomesnearhim. Whenthebabyissixmonthsold,KayjoinsBuckleyonabriefbusinesstripandleavesthebabywithherparents,hopingtogiveStanleytimetogrowclosertohisgrandson.Oneafternoon,whileKayisstillaway,Stanleytakesthebabyforawalkinthepark.Whenthebabyfinallyfallsasleepinhiscarriage,Stanleyjoinssomefriendlyneighborhoodboysinagameoffootballandlosestrackoftime.Afterthegame,whenStanleycannotfindthecarriage,hefranticallyretraceshisstepsbacktothehouse.SeeingthroughthewindowthatKayhasreturnedearly,hepanicsandtakesataxitothelocalpolicestation.ThereabefuddledStanleyconfessestothegrim-facedpolicesergeantthathehaslostthebaby.Fearingthewrathofthepolicesquad,whofoundthesweet-naturedbabyandhavefalleninlovewithhim,Stanleysecretlypraysthathisgrandsonwillnotstarttoscreamwhenhepickshimup.ToStanley'srelief,thebabyisdelightedtoseehim,andfromthatmomenton,thetwoaredevotedtoeachother.Sometimelater,atthebaby'schristening,Stanleybeamswithprideashisgrandsonisfinallynamed"StanleyBanksDunstan."
